As I was suffering the truly appalling flogging tour tickets for Ed Byrne/ Russell Kane thinly disguised as Comic relief dancing it struck me that Comedy is not so much the new rock and roll (which Dave Cohen claims is his fault...mmm) but the new football: ludicrously overpaid, fawned over youngish males whose media profile is in inverse proportion to their talent.
On this show recently retired stand-ups deliver verdicts on somehting they know absolutely nothing about - just like football punditry: smug insider gags about each other / nicknames used to alienate audience and all hosted by an inept duo.
Speaking of hosting, James Corden is everywhere and in everything yet has he ever said/ done anything to make anyone laugh? I bet he wasn't even the class clown but just had a really good agent/ class bully who stole gags from his peers. Corden's role in the odious recent Gulliver's competes with Chris O'Donnell's/ Billy Connolly's for the wooden spoon. Truly he is the Ibrahamovic of comedy: keeps getting expensive moves but constantly fails to deliver on big occasions.
When will we get the transfer/ loan system in comedy as it could then pervert the natural order as much as it ruins all football outside of the Prem Lge? Plenty of loaning of gags goes on - not all happily. And if we could transfer all panel shows to Primera Liga Comedy there might be some space for proper comedy on telly. Could work - rehearsed spontaneity delivered like automatons would be just as effective in Spanish as English. Might they take the embarrassment that is the 10 O' Clock show - the Carling Cup of comedy? Or some of that dire oxbridge R4 stuff - the FA Vase?
I saw Steve and myself very much as like a Millwall FC - generally competitive and capable of the odd cup upset, always in the promotion positions but destined never to quite make the big league - of course the Lions did so the analogy does not quite hold true (which ones do? if they were perfect then they would reduce the thing itself - deep).
Premier comics then go on to their new stadia, their sponsorship deals/ endorsements, their ladyboy conquests (not just a rumour) and of course their agents end up becoming as famous as them...
